Course Information
The Local Technical Official (LTO) course is the first step on the British Triathlon officiating pathway.
Overview
This qualification is aimed at individuals who are interested in becoming a volunteer Technical Official and has been designed to provide attendees with the knowledge required to begin officiating, as well as covering the soft skills needed to develop as an official.
The training is made up of:
- A full day course
- An associated open-book knowledge tester
- Online course workbook
- The completion of four shadows of qualified Technical Officials

Course Content
The course focuses on the fundamentals of officiating, identifying the specific requirements of the role and introducing the soft skills which help individuals become successful officials including:
- The Role of Local Technical Official and Triathlon
- Ways of Officiating
- Effective Communication
- Conflict Management
- Performance Management and Setting Goals
Role Descriptor
Following the successful completion of both the theoretical and practical elements candidates will be eligible to be the Chief Technical Official at pool based triathlon and aquathlon events along with duathlons, including children's and paratriathlon events.
They are also qualified to be an Assistant Technical Official at open water events.

Upon successful completion of the knowledge tester, trainees will be provided the polo shirt, hat, notepad, pen, whistle and lanyard. Upon successful completion of the shadow assignments and gaining the LTO qualification the jacket, rucksack and bar end tape will be provided, along with course certificate and complimentary Essential membership.
Expenses
As volunteers, qualified Local Technical Officials are entitled to receive reimbursement for expenses incurred for attending events, which are claimed directly from the Event Organiser. The British Triathlon Officials Expenses Policy can be found in the Officiating Resources section.
